Sunday, July 1st 2007, Wake up time 10:30am
The first time that I woke up at what most people consider a reasonable hour. I began the day with a 'healthy' breakfast of bacon and pancakes! I could completely understand (and enjoyed) maple syrup on the pancakes...but Lyle would put it on his bacon! That was too much for me and I was horrified at the idea. The day before I had left my trainers at Dave and Janet's cabin, not entirely sure why... so we went quickly to get them back. I am so forgetful at the worst of times.
When we had returned from the exciting journey of getting my trainers back, Claire and I played the card game war. The premise is simple, you deal out the cards between you. You lay one down on top of another, whoever lays the highest card gets both (a bit like Top Trumps.) I won, although Claire demanded I tell people that I'd lost. Being the kind man I am, I conceded and pretended she'd won the games. Bev, Lyle, Claire and I then played 'President.' If you read the rules, which you should have, I was the Vice President and then a Civilian twice, so overall, not so amazing but at least I wasn't the homeless guy. Claire and I then went onto play Blackjack, which I lost 3-2. Blackjack is just 21 for those who are uniformed. As you can tell, we were very bored with only cards to play with. I was completely happy being in such a beautiful area, but there wasn't a whole lot to do! Before we packed up to go, Claire and I played a last game of war and I won :)
We packed our bags up, so we'd be ready to go as soon as it was time. Ralph had been fishing most of the afternoon and I tried a hand at it again. Once again, I caught nothing. I clearly should not bother with it, ever. Bit like sex really? ;) While Ralph was fishing, his reel got dropped in the watery depths (not my fault) and so I had to be the hero of the day and dive into the cold lake and swim down and grab the reel. It was hard...tough...but I made it...just.
Just before we went, I thought I should take advantage of where we were so I took one last swim. There was a rock about half a mile away from the pier so I set that as my destination and swam to the rock and back. After I'd got out of the pool and dried off, it was time to head off home. We put the bags on the boat and set off for the mainland. (No hitches this time!) We headed off for home, but there was more to see on the way back! We stopped off at an antiquated Sweet Shop and bought some sweets from an older generation, gobstoppers (though I'm not sure if that's the American term), lollipops, that kind of thing.
Despite the lovely sweets, we were getting pretty hungry. We took a quick pit stop at a real American Diner! It was so cool, and was nothing like those cheap rip-offs you see on the motorway. I had a Texas burger with fries and a root beer on the side (which is something we definitely need in this country.) For my desert I had mud pie (which is more tasty than it sounds.) We finished up, paid and set off on our way.
We finally arrived back home after the car journey. I unpacked my things and got ready for an early night. I was extremely tired after the weekend away! Although we didn't do a lot of things, as you can tell by the serious amount of cards that we played, I had a wonderful time and really do miss that beautiful area, with it's Loon calls and fresh air! Although America is a nation of cities and often blamed for being one of the key people behind the problems of global warming due to their high fuel emissions, they do love their nature and due to the scale of the country, much of the natural beauty is preserved. I wish there were more places like Lake Winnipesaukee in England. The Lake District is the only thing that holds up to it. All in all, it was a very fun first road trip and mini-vacation! :)
Thanks for listening.
