Across the Universe

Wednesday, October 10th 2007, Wake up time: 7:00am

I grabbed a piece of fruit for lunch as I was running late and had no time to make a sandwich. I had drama first though, and Mr. Byrne never minded if you were a little late. We continued preparing for the freshmen assembly. It was pretty fun all the different sketches we were planning to show the different problems your average teen may face at high school. I then had American history, and a test along with that. The test itself wasn't too bad.

In American literature we had another quiz on the next part of the Crucible that we'd read up to. I didn't do too well as I hadn't bothered reading it thoroughly because I wasn't enjoying it. In psychology, we had an emotional I.Q. test, which was interesting enough. I had third lunch so I got to sit with people who's company I enjoyed!

After lunch, I had film, where we watched The Wizard of Oz. We'd already seen it, but we always watched key scenes and discussed them to help us with our essay. I'd already finished mine though! I used my directed study period to learn my lines, as I had a rehearsal after school. I saw Sharon at one point, so some of my time was spent chatting with her.

I then had rehearsal, but it wasn't great as I couldn't focus and kept forgetting quite a few lines! I had to get them learnt and quickly! I had some cookies during the break, before we re-ran the act. I then had some spaghetti, pasta, cookies, water and fruit before doing act three. I had to keep my energy up! We actually cut down some of my lines, as there were large parts that were redundant.

I finally walked home, and cleaned the kitchen. I then got started on my history homework, before grabbing a slice of Oreo cake. I was in a bit of a rush, as I wanted to get to the cinema to see Across the Universe so I could do a review on it. It's quite brilliant, if a little silly in parts. I kept catching myself singing along to the songs though! If you aren't aware, it's a musical focused using only music by The Beatles. There are various references too, the main character is called Jude, he dates a girl called Lucy. I think you can see some of the obvious links. It was enjoyable though and I still consider it a good film. I also appreciate that a woman directed it, as that's quite rare, even today. Even if you're a film buff like me, you struggle to name ten female directors, but I could name ten male ones off the top of my head right now...

Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Alfred Hitchcock, Tim Burton, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Coen Brothers, Clint Eastwood, Frank Capra. If I gave it more thought, I could think of a lot more. Honestly, off the top of my head, female directors : Katherine Bigalow, Julie Taymor (who directed Across the Universe) and Sophia Coppola (and we only really know her because of her father.)

I even took one out because I don't like most of his films (James Cameron by the way), you get the point. I made a ton of notes, and found out later on that as long as the review made it clear you'd seen the film, you got that A..so for the couple of others I did, I didn't take as many notes! I'd made like five pages of notes! I was feeling pretty good as it was a feel good film all round. I also gave the change from my ticket to a homeless person, which made me feel even better! I got the bus home, and was pretty sure I'd die because of how far I was from home..but I made it back alive!

Thanks for listening.
